Freshmen of the Hawk Band
The Freshmen
This year is almost back to how things were before COVID, back when people didn’t wear masks or stay 5 feet apart from each other. With this extracurricular activities are back into play, the dance team, theater productions and of course, The Band. This year’s freshmen are experiencing what band is really about in full force.
To get insight into this, a few freshmen band members were interviewed:
Tell me about band practices,
–”Oh my gosh, they’re so long but they’re so much fun. Going through everything that’s like a lot of fun. It might be tedious in the beginning and you might be so stressed about it and then performing it, it’s so much fun. It’s like you finally see what you did on the field. It’s like ‘oh this is what all that was for’, and it’s really exciting. ” – Lexi color guard member
–” The practices are slightly mindless, but ultimately make us better marchers and musicians. ” -Soren Henderson
What about the summer practices?
–”They’re definitely needed.”- Anonymous
What are 2 things you dislike about the band?
–”We practice too much, like a time reference. My cousin is in another state, she’s in soccer, cross country, choir, theater, and band, and she has less practice time for all of those combined than I do just for color guard and I feel like that’s kinda excessive.”-Ella Wade
–”The thing I dislike about band is how fast we have to learn the whole world of marching band in about a month.”-Jovi Flannagan
What are your favorite things about the band?
–” I really enjoy swing flag which is like a really thin pole and a super long flag that has got to be my favorite. like the ballet of part 3 it’s one of my favorites it’s my favorite part of the whole show because the crowd is always so loud whenever we’re performance it’s like oh God. I imagine I’m getting a touchdown. It’s like the feeling inside it’s always so good.”
-Lexi color guard member
–”The best part is playing music for a bunch of people.” -Harper Valerio
–”The best part about the band is how so many people are able to come together and perform something so complex and beautiful.”-Jovi Flanagan
How do you feel about your performance at the recent competition?
–”Oh, I ran into someone.”-Anonymous
–”Last Saturday’s competition’s performances were a solid 6/10 and I’m happy that we won grand champion in baritone”-Soren Henderson
What do you think should be worked on?
–”For the band as a whole I think we need to work on counting because they don’t count so on one knows what’s going on and we all get messed up and panic abt it. And then i think we also need to work on our performance quality because looking at the photos a mom took of the band and guard no one was smiling like we all looked absolutely disgusted and it was really funny”-Ella Wade
–”I think that it would help people significantly if we learned the basics of marching when we were younger in middle school.”-Harper Valerio
What do you think about the theme?
–”I think that this year’s theme BY:George is a very fun theme for a marching band show which is very fun for the audience to watch.”-Jovi Flannagan
–”This year’s theme is a lot better than last year’s theme because last year’s theme was circles. Who makes a show about circles? This year in our first competition we got 1st place for By George unmatched unrivaled unraveled, and its pretty neat, I like the colors and the vibe.”-Ella Wade
How does it feel being a Freshman in band?
–”Being a freshman it feels like you don’t know what you’re doing.”-Harper Valerio
Anything else you want to say about the band
–”Well I wanted to quit in the first week but it’s better now. Honestly, I like concert season more than marching season”-Anonymous
–”I would also like to add that this year’s group of band kids is extremely hard working and I think we’ll do really well this year.”-Jovi Flannagan
–”You should come watch us perform pretty neat and you’ll get to hear careless whisper and I feel like that kinda a good factor”-Ella Wade
Through the rigorous practices our band perseveres and never fails to deliver us a great show.
