Flashlights on, Hays Highschool is going dark. Hosted by Leaf Club, Friday (Oct. 28), Lights Out Day will have every classroom and hallway turning their lights off for the day to reduce energy use.

Leaf Club, our environmental group at Hays, works to spread environmental awareness to others. Kiera Cousins, Leaf Club Secretary, explained how the group came up with the idea and what they hoped to achieve.

“We found out that we basically just don’t recycle. We came up with the idea to have as many classrooms turn off electricity as a way to conserve power” Cousins explained. “It’s a good way to just do something small that could make a difference.”

BeBe Davis, Leaf Club’s Vice President, tells us a bit about the behind-the-scenes process. “We brought the idea to admin and the principal, and they graciously supported us” Davis comments. “We sketched out the announcements, made a few posters, and got the word out.” With the whole event planned out, now they wait to see how many classes go dark. “Now we are just hoping people remember to not turn on the lights!” BeBe adds.

Megan Johnson, Leaf Clubs sponsor, describes how “it’s awesome to see the students be excited about an event they created.” Leaf Club meets every Thursday morning, taking the time to plan out amazing events just like this, and help the school find more ways to be eco-friendly.

“I am proud since it is a great and easy idea to implement,” Johnson elaborates, after seeing these students help to start this project together.

With the lights-out day happening the same day as Halloween dress-up day and the black-light pep rally, it will add even more excitement and fun for the week- spreading good eco-friendly methods throughout it.
