Color guard Ella Wade
December 31, 2022
Ella Wade is a freshman at hays high school, academically Ella is a dedicated hardworking student with good grades, not only does she do well on paper but she is also a performer.
Ella started color guard in the sixth grade and kept with it through middle school, by eighth grade her, along with a few other cadets’ aptitudes for the sport were recognized, and the junior varsity team welcomed them onto the field. “Color guard is a lot of dancing and throwing and spinning, there are even rifles and swords involved, not real of course. It’s not too hard once you learn and know what to do, eventually, you get used to the dances and I end up zoning out.” Ella explains. “The thing is it’s also really scary, but like, fun. There’s adrenaline and it excites you.
Though she performed before, Ella notes that marching season for the first time as a freshman was fun but still overwhelming.
“Practices were a nightmare” she said. “It’s really a lot, a lot of time, a lot of effort, and very draining, especially since I’m not really a sports person.”
Other than the practices, and not being enthused by the costumes, Ella found the marching season performances enjoyable.
“The best part of the whole experience was the bus rides. We’re all very chaotic and loud. We’d play music and sing and manage to do our makeup all at the same time. I especially liked the bus rides at night coming home from an away game, it was always nice being inside the bus.”
Now that football season is over we don’t really see the color guard until next year, but they definitely haven’t gone away for hibernation. While the cleats are put away and the hoops come out, the Winter guard takes the stage. Winter guard is performed inside and without the band, this year the performance will be to the song “Drops of Jupiter” by Train.
“I like the song but to be honest I’m worried about how the costumes will look. Then again I usually am. I’ll just have to see when we get them,” she said. “But from what I know so far the show sounds really cool, I’m really excited for it. So please come and watch us.”
