Barney gets a Glow Up

If you’re a Millenial or Generation Z,  most of you remember the 1900s children’s show Barney & Friends, which

featured the big purple and green dinosaur with terrifying, beady black eyes. How many of you tie Barney back with

fond memories? I’m sure only a few left their childhood unscathed from the soulless permanent smile and horrifying

songs that he sang.

“I remember going to someone’s house when I was a small child and staring at a little computer that sat on the floor, with Barney dancing across the screen. I still remember the utter confusion and fear I felt watching him. I just wanted to go home, get away from the wretched dinosaur,” Sara Brooks, 10, said with tears in her eyes. “I’m not going to lie, the first time I saw Barney I was a little scared, but I mean who wasn’t scared of

Barney as a child? He was a creepy dude,” Jackson Juel, 10, said.

As if our purple trauma wasn’t enough for Hollywood, Barney the big purple dinosaur will return to TV in 2024 with

a new and improved animated series. Mattel, who also produced all of the iconic Barbie movies, says their new series

will deliver the same message as the original 1992 children’s series: love and kindness. The most talked about part of

the new series is Barnie’s aminated makeover. They switched out his small beady, eyes for big green ones and gave him an approachable smile. They also softened his features, which lessens the scary feature. Although Barney was horrifying for little me, I’m excited to see the new show for a new generation.
