At a special meeting on Monday night, the Hays CISD board of trustees approved $4 million to purchase 30 new 2025 school buses within the next 12 months.
Following last month’s bus crash that killed a 5-year-old Tom Green Elementary School student, the district made it priority to put in funding towards adding extra safety features to their buses, mainly the installation of seatbelts, as many of the districts buses currently lack them. Buses made prior to 2017 are not required to have seatbelts.
But with the addition of seatbelts and the ones already in use, we asked how many actually people use the seatbelts that are currently in place.
In May 2025 voters will weigh in on funding for putting seat belts in existing buses.
