New Education Bond Leads to Improvements

In May of 2017, voters approved a $250,000,000 bond package aimed towards education improvements. This bond will not only fund the creation of three new schools (one of which is a highschool that will be located in Kyle), but it will also improve existing schools in the district.

“We’re building a new high school, and two new elementary schools. At our school, we’re actually building a baseball/softball field, and we are building a new band hall; brand new from the ground up,” Principal David Pierce said.

Prior to the bond being approved, in September 2016, a Growth Impact Committee was empaneled by the Board of Trustees. The role of com- mittee members was to assess district growth and try to recommend the 2017 bond.

“I was actually on the growth impact committee as a non-voting member. There were 9 or 10 meetings last year leading up to the vote. Basically a bond requires voter approval to go out and borrow the money, and so the community voted about 66% for and 34% against it,” Pierce said.

One of the most notable additions to the school is the new music hall, which will accommodate the needs of both future band and choir students.

“I think it is very needed because both programs, the band and the choir, have grown just in the five years I’ve been here to the point where we’re stashing stuff in hallways. We are bursting at the seams. We’re trying to get 300 band students dressed after rehearsal for classes but both bathrooms have only two stalls. We’ve grown so much that we need the additional space,” Music Secretary Amy Vargas said.

Instead of expanding upon the original music hall built in 1983, the new building will have an entirely new location within the campus.

“It’ll be built where the band currently practices, out on the practice pad. The new building will be built right on top of it,” Vargas said.
