Halloween originated as a Celtics holiday called festival of Samhain. This was a religious celebration that was welcomed on November 1st in Ireland and Ancient Britain, and was marked as the start of winter and to gather food for the cold winter. During the festival people would wear costumes , burn bonfires on hilltops and priest held rituals to ward off all ghost that returned home to visit their home.
In A.D 43 The Roman empire took over Celtic territory which meant Roman originated festivals and the Celebration of Samhain were now combined. The first day people showed respect to the dead and the second day celebrated Pomona (the goddess of fruit abundance) this created the trend for bobbing for apples because the symbol was a apple. Halloween in European countries wasn’t very prominent, it was more celebrated in Maryland than any other places, but when a large group of immigrants came to America in the mid 19th century their Halloween traditions came along with them and started to mold how halloween is today. It started with public celebrations to celebrate harvest, People would throw party’s and tell scary stories and each others fortunes. Halloween became one of the most popular U.S holidays today among children.
