‘Rehash’ album review

Band’s debut is well-written, underrated

In June the new upcoming band Rehash made their debut album Rehash that includes 10 tracks:

“It Must Be Easy”, “April Lady”, “She Shouldn’t Mind”, “Cold Flood”, “Loathsome, The Love Song”, “Letting Go”, “Laura”, “Along With You”, “Power Trips”, and “At The End”.

The South Florida band started off as a duo with Renzo Valdez (Rhythm guitarist and vocalist) and Sebastian Gamez (lead guitarist, and keyboardist). After the release of their debut album they began to play with their current bassist and drummer Ethan LopezĀ  and Daseth Lopez (bassist) in July.

The album is fully written (except for April Lady), produced, recorded and performed by Sebastian Gamez and Renzo Valdez. The album has alternative rock, classic rock, grunge and indie elements that really make it diverse and underrated.

Starting off as a small local band and eventually making TikToks of covers from bands like Nirvana, Radiohead, Queen and Weezer, the band has now gained 3,926 monthly listeners on Spotify. They refer to themselves jokingly as “the TikTok band” due to people discovering them on the app. However the covers they post are absolutley amazing, and Renzo’s voice is phenomenal.

My favorites on the album are “It Must Be Easy,” “April Lady,” “Letting Go,” “Power Trips,” and “Laura”.

“It Must Be Easy” is my personal favorite off the album because of its mellow soft singing that escalates to a grunge heavy guitar riff that I adore. It has nice grunge elements while keeping a melodious tone. If you like Nirvana’s In Utero you would definetly like this song and the overall album.

They play a cover of Smile’s 1982 “April Lady” which gives off a classic rock feel like The Beatles. However, the rasp in the lyric “It’s been good to have you around” really adds to the rock-based component of the album and is my favorite lyric in the song.

“Letting Go” opens up in a soft riff and leads into a beautiful almost romantic guitar solo that reminds me of the guitar solo in Guns N’ Roses “November Rain”. The singing in this song once again reminds me of The Beatles and gives off a melancholic feel with the lyrics “You don’t love me anymore, it had to die, no matter how hard we tried“. Unlike “April Lady” and “Letting Go”, “Power Trips” starts with a grunge guitar riff with similar chord progression to Nirvana’s “Very Ape.”

The song definetly has influences from Nirvana and Kurt Cobain’s singing style. The style of this song is similar to other bands who are contributing to the new grunge revival like Sap, Sun Puddle, Aberdeen is Dead, and The Jins. What I think gives this album diversity is not only the classic rock and grunge elements but the spanish rock which is very rare nowadays. “Laura” is a song in spanish and is in my opinon the most underrated song on the album. The melancholy lyrics and the long notes in the chorus “Sol, Quedo, Lejos” are so beautiful and well written. I really love the tone of the guitar in this song.

Overall this album is very well written and so underrated. I believe that Rehash can really make it big if more people share their music. I can’t wait for future albums and singles from this band. I rate their debut album a 9/10 and I would love to hear more from them.
